Piccio romps off with Trans Am crown, Davao's Ababa settles at 11th in Optimist Int'l
Mia Piccio kisses her trophy after ruling the Women's Trans Am Championship in Nebraska.
Mia Piccio enhanced her promising golf career by winning the 80th Women’s Trans Amateur Championship, dominating Agostina Parmigiani of Argentina in the morning match before hanging tough in the last 18 holes to fashion out a 3&2 victory at The Country Club of Lincoln in Nebraska Saturday.
The top-seeded Piccio kept the momentum of her romps in the quarters and the semis by firing six birdies in the first half of their grueling 36-hole duel to go 6-up. She hiked the lead to seven holes twice, the last when she birdied the 23rd hole then displayed grace under pressure in the last 10 holes to annex the inspiring win.
“I’m very, very happy that I finally won a big amateur title here in the US.
This means so much to me,” said the 19-year-old Bacolod native, one of the US-based scholars of the ICTSI golf squad under coach Bong Lopez.
But just when Piccio thought that she had the crown under wraps, Parmigianistruck with three straight birdies from 27th hole (No. 9) to close within three with seven holes to go. But Piccio made a superb lob shot after missing the par-3 12th, sinking a five-foot par putt that virtually clinched her the championship.
“That was the championship point for Mia,” said Lopez, referring to his ward’s brilliant save on No. 12. “Had she lost that hole, she would’ve have been just two holes up and the pressure would’ve been on her.”
But Piccio, who lost in the quarterfinals in last week’s 108th North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, bucked the pressure and matched her rival’s par game in the next four holes to wrap up the championship.
"Mia played so well and made so many shots, I just had to do my best with 18 holes to play," the 22-year-old Parmigiani. "I finally made some long putts and got some confidence. But Mia played so good when it got a little close."
Piccio had just 27 putts during her first 18 holes and had no three-putt in her final 16 holes.
"I like the greens here, fast but true," said Piccio, who just finished her freshman year at the University of Florida. "I've been playing good lately and qualified for the US Amateur and played well at the North-South."
The win also avenged Dottie Ardina’s loss to Parmigiani in the quarterfinal round and boosted Piccio’s bid for a spot in the national team vying in various international competitions this year, including the Asian Games in Guangzhou.
“I’d like to thank God for this victory,” said Piccio, who also expressed her gratitude to ICTSI boss Ricky Razon for giving her, and her teammates, all the opportunities to hone their talent and skills through top-notch competitions abroad.
Piccio’s victory also came on the heels of ICTSI teammate Andie Unson’s win in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship where the latter bagged the girls’ 14-15 crown at the PGA National Golf and Resort Club in Palm Beach, Florida last week.
Meanwhile, Sarah Ababa settled for 11th in the premier girls’ 16-18 division of the Optimist International topped by Thailand’s Sainee Thitiranakorn over the weekend.
The Dabawenya closed out with a 75 for a 231, 13 strokes behind Thitiranakor, who had a 218 after a 71.(pr)
Piccio rolls into Trans Am finals, Davao's Ababa struggles in Florida
Mia Piccio bundled out two rivals to reach the finals of the 80th Women's Trans Amateur Championship match play but ICTSI teammate Dottie Ardina dropped out with a quarterfinal loss at The Country Club of Lincoln in Nebraska Friday.
The top seeded Piccio continued to dish out fine form, outsteadying Emma Lavy, 2&1, in the morning quarterfinal match then dominating Rachel Rohanna, 5&4, in the semis to clinch the first berth in the championship.
But while Piccio frolicked, Ardina found the going tough against Agostina Parmigiani, losing her touch at the backside and absorbing a 4&3 loss from her Argentinian rival.
Parmigiani went on to beat compatriot Sofia Toccafondi, 2&1, to arrange a title showdown with the top ICTSI bet.
“Mia played perfect golf in the semis, scoring a four-under card in stroke play. She’s confident and it will be good if she gets past Ardina’s tormentor in the finals,” said ICTSI team coach Bong Lopez.
Against Lavy, Piccio took charge early, going 3-up after five holes then posted a 4-up lead at the turn. Lavy fought back with birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 but Piccio matched pars on the next three holes to wrap up the match.
Ardina fought Agostina to an all-square game after nine holes but the Filipino bet flubbed a four-foot birdie putt on No. 11 to trail then failed to match her rival’s birdie binge on Nos. 12, 13 and 14 to yield the match.
Piccio returned in the afternoon oozing with confidence, birdying Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 11 to go four-under in stroke play. At the par-3 No. 14, she hit her tee shot to within three feet for another birdie to finish off Rohanna.
In Florida, Dabawenya Sarah Ababa struggled with 77 and 79 and stood in joint 13th with a 156, 12 strokes off Nicole Ferre of Venezuela and Mexico’s Regina Plasencia after two rounds of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship’ girls 16-18 division at the PGA National Golf Resort and Spa.
Ferre and Plasencia had 144s after 68 and 74, respectively, as they posted a one-shot lead over Manuela Carbajo of Argentina who carded a 71 for a145 in the premier category of the annual event for the world’s leading junior players.
Andie Unson of the ICTSI team topped the 14-15 category while Clare Legaspi romped away with the 10-11 division crown last week.
Over in Malaysia, Geleen Handog, also of ICTSI squad, scored a 225 from rounds of 74-77-74 and finished third in the 36th RSGC Ladies Amateur Open won by Iman Nordina (74-221) of Malaysia at the Royal Selangor Golf Club last week.
Sheryl Villasencio had a 241 after an 81 while Sun Choi, winner of the Indonesian Junior Open, made a 243 after a 76.(pr)

Unson bags Optimist plum in sudden death
Andie Unson holds the Philippine flag as she shows her Optimist Junior trophy.
Andie Unson cracked under pressure in the final round but toughened up in sudden death, nipping Daniela Darquea of Ecuador in the second playoff hole to capture the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship girls’ 14-15 crown at the PGA National Golf and Resort Club in Palm Beach, Florida Monday.
Unson clipped the bigger, power-hitting Darquea with a gutsy game in the playoff, knocking in an eight-foot downhill birdie putt at the par-5 No. 1 to tie and then making a routine two-putt par on the par-4 No. 8 to clinch it as Darquea three-putted from 40 feet.
“I didn’t feel any pressure in the playoff since I knew that she was so big and I was not expected to win. My knees were trembling as I putt for birdie and I was so happy when I saw it going in,” said the 15-year-old Unson, playing out of the Master Academy.
She was actually ready to go to the third playoff hole but got the big surprise when Darquea missed a short putt for par.
“I thank God for this victory and coach Bong (Lopez) and teammates for their support,” said Unson, who has won all her four playoff battles.
Unson wavered with a four-over par 76, marred by a double-bogey on the par-4 16th, for a 220 in the 54-hole tournament, enabling Darquea to force a playoff with an even par 72.
“Although she somewhat wilted under pressure in the early going, she made three pressure-packed par putts in the closing holes and hung tough in the playoff.
That spoke well of her character and determination to win,” said ICTSI coach Bong Lopez, who saw the potential in Unson late last year and tapped her into the ICTSI pool.
Clare Amelia Legaspi made it a two-win romp for the Philippines as she dominated the girls’ 10-11 division, closing out with a one-under 71 for a 223 and a three-stroke victory over Thai Ke Rojanapeansatit and American Claire Hodges, who both had 226s after a 73 and 78, respectively.
While Unson wavered in the final round, Legaspi showed superb form, firing the only under-par round in her division on a three-birdie, two-bogey stint to win by a big margin.
Emi Koga of Hawaii, just one stroke behind Unson after two rounds, bombed out with an 83 and tumbled down to joint ninth with a 228.
Ma. Alejandra Villalobos of Colombia wound up third with a 223 after a 76. Daniella Uy, also of ICTSI team, matched par 72 for a 219 and finished third in the 12-13 class won by Thailand’s Pail Ruttanasupagid, who shot a 70 for a 215 and a three-shot victory over Ana Valdez of Mexico, who had a 218 after a 76.(pr)
