Zanie Boy Gialon set a new course record of six-under 66 at Summit Point as he seized a whopping six-stroke lead over Rupert Zaragosa and Alex Nallos while Dottie Ardina showed fine form and fired a four-under 68 to pace the ladies side of the Samsung Amateur Open in Lipa, Batangas, Friday.
Gialon sizzled with seven birdies against a lone bogey, including four in a flawless stint at the backside of the rolling layout as he dominated the Championship Division on a hot, humid day and shattered the previous best of 69 by Omar Dungca during the 2008 Summit Invitational.
More importantly, it gave the top ICTSI-The Country Club bet a big cushion over the fancied Zaragosa as they head to the final 18 holes of the annual event presented by Samsung Phils. which also features the cream of the ladies crop and future stars.
Zaragosa, the reigning juniors and national champion from ICTSI-Cangolf team, mixed three birdies with the same number of bogeys and settled for a 72 in a tie with Nallos, who made five birdies but fumbled with five bogeys, while Banny Abaño of Del Monte carded a 73 in a tie with Koreans Hwang Kang Youl and Kim Chang Yeon from Riviera.
Art Arbole, winner of last week’s Cangolf Am Open, wavered with two 37s and dropped into a tie with five others in seventh place while Magno Arancon, also of Del Monte, and J. Austria shot 75s and Reymon Jaraula skied to an 80.
Ardina, enjoying top form, hit five birdies, including three at the front and back-to-back from No. 13 as she overcame a missed-green bogey on No. 8 for a 69, moving 18 holes away from annexing her third straight crown after ruling the Malaysian Juniors and the Thailand Amateur Open the last three weeks.
She led ICTSI teammate Chihiro Ikeda by two with the latter fighting back from a double-bogey mishap on No. 6 with birdies on Nos. 3, 9, 14 and 16 for a 70. Lovelynn Guioguio made a 71 while Sarah Ababa matched par 72.
Ardina and Ikeda, along with alternate Jayvie Agojo, are using the event as part of their buildup for next month’s SEA Games in Jakarta where the ICTSI-backed Philippine team is the defending champion and Ikeda the reigning individual titlist.
Miya Legaspi, the 11-year-old wonder, turned in a three-over 75 marked by two birdies as the five-time US Kids Golf champion tied for fifth with Sunshine Baraquiel, Chanelle Avaricio and Daniella Uy.
Meanwhile, A. Alegre and H. Ahn carded identical 75s to lead Class A of the event sponsored by Airphil Express, Mizuno, Custom Clubmakers, Footjoy and Titliest by Empire Golf, Loro, Endress+Hauser, Sweet Photolicious, Torch Resto Bar, Bluemansion Enterprise, GlucosCare, Omnisource International, Business Mirror and Inquirer Golf.
J. Seo made a 73 and posted a four-stroke lead over Dae Kim in Class B while T. Ilagan shot an 86 for a one-shot lead over V. Plata in Class C. G. Aguado took the Class D lead with an 89 while G. Villacencio and D. Salvador paced the ladies Classes B and C with 79 and 98, respectively.(pr)

Jaraulas force 3-way logjam at helm
DAVAO – Cousins Boboy Jaraula and Raymond Jaraula charged home with a brilliant four-under 32 to salvage a 72 and force a three-way tie for the lead with the Randy Garalde-Ryan Co and Ernie Rellon-Marcel Puyat pairs in the second round of the Davao National Pro-Am presented by Samsung at the Apo Golf and Country Club here Friday.
The Jaraulas looked headed for a poor stint after a 40 and two bogeys against a birdie at the back but rattled off five birdies in the last six holes, including a four-birdie string from No. 13 for that 72, putting them back into title contention with one round left in the P1 million event.
The Garalde-Co and Rellon-Puyat tandems also toughened up at the backside with a pair of 35s with the former matching the Jaraulas’ even par output and the latter birdying the last two holes for a 35 and a 73 for identical 145s.
Antonio Asistio II and partner Brent Sumampong carded a 74 and were a stroke adrift at 146 while Raul Minoza and Bunny Abano hobbled with a 76 but remained in the hunt at 147 in a tie with the Eddie Bagtas-Aris Mata pair, which shot a 74.
But while the unfancied pros drew solid games from their amateur partners in the alternate-shot format event sponsored by Samsung and Emcor, the tour’s big guns continued to struggle with their teammates and stood way behind to contend for the top P172,000 purse.
First round leaders Elmer Salvador and Ludwig Ledesma, who shot a 70 in the first round, shot themselves in the foot this time, making eight bogeys and a double bogey against two birdies for an 80 as they tumbled to seventh at 150, five strokes behind.

Salvador-Ledesma takes charge in Samsung pro-am
DAVAO – Elmer Salvador and Ludwig Ledesma combined for a two-under par 70 in tough condition to wrest a one-stroke lead over the Raul Miñoza-Bunny Abaño pair at the start of the Samsung-Emcor Davao National Pro-Am presented by Samsung at the Apo Golf and Country Club here, Thursday.
Salvador, who shot an eight-under 64 to finish second to Juvic Pagunsan in the ICTSI Apo Invitational three weeks ago, and Ledesma rallied with a 34 at the backside to emerge the leading pair in a 90-team starting field in the 54-hole P1 million tournament played under the alternate-shot format.
Raul Minoza and Bunny Abaño combined for a 35 at the front to finish with a 71 while only three teams matched par as the tour’s big guns struggled with their respective amateurs, who include leading players in the ranks, on a tight course made tougher and longer by overnight rains.
Antonio Asistio II and Brent Sumampong, and Jun Bernis and Toffee Tionko strung up identical 36-36 rounds while Ernie Rellon and top amateur Marcel Puyat, on a break from his studies at Stanford U, overcame a 38 at the front with a 34 for joint third.
In the hunt with 73s are the pairs of Eddie Bagtas-Aris Mata, Ramil Bisera-Toshiaki Shinmura, Boboy Jaraula-Raymond Jaraula, and Randy Garalde-Ryan Co, while the Jong Laput-Rex Goquinco and Dodot Ababa-Vincent Gumapac tandems stood at 74 and Larry Villasencio and Ariel Villasencio made a 75.

Star-studded Davao National Samsung pro-am unfolds
The P1 million Davao National Pro-Am unwraps on Thursday, Aug. 25, with eight of the top 10 players on the local tour’s Order of Merit ranking and a host of top amateurs, including a former national champion, vying for top honors at the Apo Golf and Country Club in Davao.
Juvic Pagunsan, winner of four of the first nine legs of the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour and the current OOM frontrunner, heads the chase for the top P172,000 purse in the 54-hole event presented by Samsung, hoping to keep his win streak at the quaint par-72 layout he has mastered the last three years.
The smooth-swinging Bacolod pro has ruled the ICTSI Apo leg for three straight years, including a four-shot romp over homegrown bet Elmer Salvador three weeks ago, making him the player to beat in the event held in coordination with leading retail network Emcor.
But Pagunsan needs to draw the best from amateur partner Rico Trajano in the alternate shot format where one has to set up a good shot for the other to produce a low score the way Edgar Ababa and Paul Echavez did in beating Dan Cruz and Jerson Balasabas by five in last year’s staging of the event.
Salvador, No. 2 in the OOM derby, is teaming up with Ludwig Ledesma, No. 3 Tony Lascuna is with Jun Serado, while No. 4 Jhonnel Ababa has partnered with Benjie Leparto.
No. 5 Mhark Fernando, fresh from his maiden pro victory at ICTSI Del Monte last week, has tapped Bong Cabang as his partner, reigning OOM champion Jay Bayron will team up with Alemar Etrone, while No. 9 Orlan Sumcad has partnered with Bien Cerbo.
Frankie Minoza, the former two-time Philippine Open champion, makes a rare appearance on a local tournament as he teams up with Ting Castillo in the event backed by Kawasaki, Apo Golf and Country Club, Cargo Serv, Goetz, Transworld, Malayan Insurance, Dasia Security, LVL Construction and Vigor Construction.

Joson, Lee cop Samsung nat’l club titles
Richard Joson of Royal Northwoods outgunned Valley Golf’s Adrian Mauricio and came away with a 3&2 victory to capture the 2011 Samsung National Tournament of Club Champions men’s championship at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite over the weekend.
The second-seeded Joson kept the momentum of his impressive wins over Mt. Malarayat’s Gerald Katigbak, 5&4, and Cho Han Pyo of Eagle Ridge, 7&5, to frustrate Mauricio and crown himself the new champion of the annual tournament among winners of the country’s leading golf clubs.
Ayala Greenfields’ Mela Lee, on the other hand, steeled herself up in the down-to-the-wire battle for the ladies crown, nipping top seed Tina Gonzales of Orchard for a 1-up victory after 19 holes at the Faldo layout.
The win capped Lee’s stirring title run as the third ranked bet also edged No. 2 Olive Yoon of Mt. Manila Standard Today: Ababa, Echavez coast to 5-shot win
DAVAO—Edgar Ababa waited 13 years to claim another victory as a professional, but needed the big help of Paul Echavez as they streaked to a five-stroke victory with a closing one-over-par 73 yesterday in the P1 million Davao National Pro-am co-presented by Samsung and Emcor at the Apo Golf and Country Club course here.
Ababa and Echavez, whose families live in the environs of the Apo course, was the pair that clicked in the 54-hole tourney using the alternate shots format with their second 73 in three days, giving them a 218 aggregate and counting the even-par 72 they assembled in the second round at the tree-lined layout.
“We knew the course very well and it gave us a lot of confidence,” said Ababa, who won his only title as a pro in the 1997 Epson Classic at Alabang.
Ababa and Echavez finished five strokes ahead of the semi-retired Dan Cruz and national pool member Jerson Balasabas, who submitted the day’s best round of 72 for solo second place at 223.
Dante Torres and Alejandro Saban, the first-round leaders, claimed solo third at 224 after a 77 in the tourney, which marked Samsung’s return to local pro golf.
Celso Villegas, president and COO of Emcor, said they will exhaust all possible means to make the pro-am an annual competition. He credited the support of Kawasaki, Tri-com, BCLN Golf, LVL Construction, Malayan Insurance, Allegoiance Cargo, Edcon, Mega Joy Trading, Aldwin Oriental Graphics, Canon, Tran World Brokerage Corp., Cargo Serve, MDR, Banbros, Goetz and MSI-ECS for making the inaugural edition possible.
The 45-year-old Ababa took home P172,000 as the winning pro while Echavez, a 22-year-old member of the ICTSI Canlubang squad, went home with P20,000 worth of merchandise. Cruz, a teaching pro at Eagle Ridge, settled for the runner-up prize of P160,000.
