The Philippines blew a six-shot lead in the Putra Cup but pulled away in the
Lion City Cup behind its gutsy junior squad while gaining ground in the Santi
Cup in the second day of action at the Royal Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, Wednesday.
Mhark Fernando slowed down with a 73 after a 69 as Team RP sputtered with a 224
after a 214 for a 438, dropping to second behind a charging Thailand side, which
grabbed the lead at 437 after a 217.
Singapore matched RP’s first round 214 as it moved up to third with a 443 while
Malaysia took fourth spot with a 452 after a 223 followed by Indonesia
(221-454), Myanmar (230-458), Hong Kong (240-480) and Laos (248-495) in that
order.
Miguel Tabuena struggled with a 76 after a 72 but Jerson Balasabas counted with
a 75 as Dabawenyo Jhonnel Ababa groped for form with a 79.
Poom Saksankin fired a 69 for Thailand, which also drew a 73 from Suparkorn
Utaipat and a 75 from Wasin Sripattranusorn while Gregory Foo shot the
tournament best of 68 for Singapore, which also got a 72 from Joshua Shou and a
74 from Tze Huang Choo.
The RP juniors, meanwhile, padded its overnight lead of four to six with a 221
as it assembled a 36-hole of 447, six shots clear of Thailand, which had a 453
after a 223. Malaysia stood at third with a 225-457 followed by Singapore
(227-458), Indonesia (227-461), Hong Kong (237-471) and Myanmar (245-482).
The RP ladies also bounced back into contention after an awful start as it shot
a 221-448 to move within three shots off Thailand, which struggled with a 229
after a 216 for a 445.
Malaysia matched RP’s 221 to remain tied for second while Indonesia made a 228
for fourth at 462 followed by Myanmar (235-469), Singapore (240-470) and Hong
Kong (240-482).
“It was a tough day for the men’s team but I’m confident they would recover in
the last two days,” said NGAP president Leandro Mendoza. “With our junior team
sustaining its form and the ladies squad fighting back, we could even aspire for
a sweep.”
The Thais did the trick last year when they dominated the Lion and Santi Cups
and outlasted the Singaporeans in the Putra Cup in Chiangrai.
The RP ladies, meanwhile, rebounded from a harrowing first round stint of 227 as
it pooled a 221 then watched Thailand fumble with a 229 to wheel back into
contention in the Santi Cup.
Andie Unson, who shared the scoring honors with Irina Gabasa with 75s in Team
RP‘s atrocious 227 output in the first round, carded a 73 while Gabasa and ICTSI
teammates Dottie Ardina and Chihiro Ikeda all turned in 74s with one dropped
from the scoring in the four-to-play, three-to-count format event.
But the 221 proved enough to put the Filipinas back in the title hunt, moving
within three strokes off Thailand after falling by 11 strokes after 18 holes.
The Thais skied to a 229 after an impressive 216 for a 445, just three shot
ahead of the charging Philippines and Malaysia, which remained tied at second
with 448s. The hosts matched the Pinays 221 output.
The 15-year-old Unson, who ruled the AccuSport Championship in North Carolina,
the San Diego Junior Masters and the Optimist International Junior tournament
early in the year, also moved within two strokes off Thai veteran Yupaporn
Kawinpakorn in the individual race, assembling a 36-hole aggregate of 148.
Kawinpakorn remained in the lead with a 146.(pr)

RP Cuppers seize 6-shot lead as Fernando fires a 69
Mhark Fernando played true to form and fired a three-under 69 while youthful
Miguel Tabuena debuted in the men’s game with a solid 72 as the Philippines
pooled a two-under 214 to post a six-shot lead over Thailand at the start of the
Putra Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tuesday.
Fernando, the reigning Indonesian and Malaysian Am champion, strung up a 35-34
round at the Royal Selangor Golf Club to power the Filipinos’ hot start in the
50th staging of the annual championship otherwise known as the Southeast Asia
Golf Championship.
Tabuena, moving up from last year’s junior team to the men’s squad, actually led
RP’s charge with a stirring 33 at the front but the 15-year-old shotmaker slowed
down at the back with a 39 for that 72.
With Jhonnel Ababa carding a 73, the Philippines took charge with a 214, six
shots ahead of Thailand, which swept last year’s Putra Cup, Santi Cup and the
Lion City Cup at home but could only come up with a mediocre 220 yesterday.
Jerson Balasabas made a 76 and didn’t count for the ICTSI-backed Team RP, whose
campaign is sanctioned by the National Golf Association of the Phils.
The Philippines is seeking an end to a 14-year title drought in the
four-to-play, three-to-count format event celebrating its golden year at its
home course. The RP Cuppers last won in 1996 also in Malaysia.
Atthachai Jaichalad fired a 71 and Poom Saksansin made a 73 but Wasin
Sripattranusorn and Suparkorn Utaipat groped for identical 76s, one of which
counted for Thailand.
Myanmar grabbed third spot with a 228 while Malaysia, failing to flash its
familiarity with the layout, stood at 229 in a tie with Singapore. Indonesia lay
too far behind at 233.
The 18-and-under squad, led by reigning national champion Clyde Mondilla
likewise came through with a fine start of 226 to pace the Lion City Cup, four
strokes ahead of Thailand, which had a 230, while Singapore turned in a 231 and
Malaysia pooled a 232.
Mondilla matched par 72 while Miggy Yee and Jobim Carlos put in 76 and 78,
respectively, for Team RP’s 226 aggregate. Andres Saldana failed to count with
an 80.
Fernando and Mondilla also took the day’s top individual honors.
But while the men’s and boys teams sizzled, the RP girls floundered as reigning
national champion Irina Gabasa and Andie Unson carded identical 75s and Chihiro
Ikeda made a 77 for a 227, 11 strokes behind Thailand, which assembled an even
216.
Dottie Ardina, winner of last week’s Karambunai Open, limped home with a 78 and
failed to count.
Yupaporn Kawinpakorn shot a 69 to lead Thailand’s title-retention bid with
Paraisa Yok Tuan and Pinrath Looboonruang backing her up with 73 and 74 for a
216.
Malaysia also shot a 227 to tie RP at second.(pr)

Ardina rallies with 69, outsteadies Davao's Ikeda to cop Karambunai crown
Dottie Ardina battled back from two strokes down and outsteadied ICTSI teammate
Chihiro Ikeda of Davao in a backside shootout to fire a 69 and capture the 10th
Karambunai Amateur Open 2010 by three strokes at the Nexus Golf Club and Resort
in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Sunday.
Ardina used a near-impeccable short game to turn back Ikeda, coming up with two
superb iron shots in the last four holes for birdies, including on the 18th
that
capped her fightback from two strokes after a three-over 75 in the second
round.
She had a 34-35.
The reigning Southern Ladies champion totaled a 213, including an opening 69,
for a three-shot romp over Ikeda, who kept the lead with a 35 at the front but
reeled back with a double-bogey 6 on No. 14 where she reached the green in four.
Ikeda, winner here in 2008, wound up with a 74 and a 216 for second while
Jayvie
Agojo completed the ICTSI bets’ 1-2-3 finish with a 221 after matching par 72.
Sarah Ababa, who won the Malaysian Junior Open last week, took fourth place
with
a 223 after a 72 while Lovelynn Guioguio shot a 75 and placed fifth at 225
followed by Malaysian Diana Tham (75-226), Andie Unson (75-229) and Celeste Lo,
also of Malaysia (82-235).
The victory also primed up Ardina, together with Ikeda, for this week’s Santi
Cup, the ladies competition of the annual Putra Cup firing off tomorrow
in Kuala
Lumpur.
But the RP bets failed to complete a sweep as two-day leader Dante Becierra
cracked under pressure at the back, limping with a six-over card for a 78,
enabling Malaysian Lam Yu Shuen to snatch the win with a 226 after a 73.
Peter Villaber, who trailed Becierra in the first two days, also sputtered with
a triple bogey 6 on No. 16 with Shuen pouncing on the Filipinos’ erratic finish
to post a one-stroke victory in the men’s side.
Villaber settled for second with a 227 after a 75 while Becierra slid to third
with a 228 followed by Malaysians Peter Tan (75-229) and Lee Ka Tung (74-231),
Kenneth Kano (78-234), Alexes Nallos (82-234), Art Arbole (81-240), Paul

Juvic zeroes in on Merit crown
Juvic Pagunsan remains well ahead of the field in the Order of Merit race in the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour, nearing the P1 million mark in earnings heading into the last three legs of the circuit beginning next week at Royal Northwoods.
The smooth-swinging Pagunsan has raked in winnings of P917,332, largely from two victories at ICTSI-Riviera and ICTSI-Apo legs and a couple of runner-up finishes at ICTSI Mt. Malarayat and at the ICTSI-Aboitiz in Cebu last month.
He could've actually pulled away from the field had he not figured in a final round controversy at ICTSI-Del Monte where he, along with Elmer Salvador and Richard Sinfuego, were disqualified for a breach of golf rule.
But the 31-year-old Bacolod ace has recovered from that misfortune and went on to finish runner-up to Jay Bayron in Cebu which also marked Aboitiz Equity Ventures' first involvement in pro golf as chief sponsor.
Bayron, boosted by his P200,000 winnings in the last leg and a string of runner-up finishes in the early going of the circuit sponsored by International Container Terminals Services, Inc., moved to No. 2 in the OOM race, amassing P809,317 and hoping to catch up with Pagunsan with solid finishes at ICTSI-Royal Northwoods on Oct. 6-8, at ICTSI-Valley Golf on Nov. 10-12 and at the final leg at ICTSI-Canlubang on Dec. 8-10.
Artemio Murakami is in third with P730,310 followed by ICTSI-Forest Hills leg winner Mars Pucay (P650,07), defending OOM champion Salvador (P522,644), Tony Lascuna (P489,964), Ferdie Aunzo (P458,164), lucky ICTSI-Del Monte leg winner Cassius Casas (P418,769), Angelo Que (P404,571) and Benjie Magada (P346,850, winner at ICTSI-Orchard leg.
The rest, including No. 11 and ICTSI-Sherwood leg champion Marvin Dumandan (P331,973), would be too far to pose a threat to Pagunsan although they are all expected to go all out in the last three legs to improve on their respective standings and gain the much-needed momentum for next year's staging of the annual tournament organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. and backed by MJ Carr Golf Management, Jaguar, Land Rover, Studio 23, Balls TV, Srixon/Cleveland Golf, Callaway Golf, Odyssey and Golf Punk and media partners Business Mirror, Inquirer Golf Monthly, A Round of Golf, Pinoygolfer.com and Omnisource. ICTSI bets near Karambunai Am sweep
Dabawenya Chihiro Ikeda made two three-putts and wavered with a 73 after a 69 but wrested
a two-shot lead instead as erstwhile co-leader Dottie Ardina hobbled with a 75
in the second round of the 10th Karambunai Amateur Open 2010 at the Nexus Golf
Club and Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Saturday.
Dante Becierra also limped home with a 76 after a 74 but padded his overnight
one-shot lead over teammate Peter Villaber to two as the ICTSI-backed bets
threatened to sweep the 54-hole tournament like what their younger teammates did
in the Malaysian Junior Open last week.
Ikeda actually played solid off the mound and came up with superb iron shots,
hitting 15 greens in regulation. But she struggled on the unpredictable putting
surface of the par-72 layout and three-putted twice on Nos. 5 and 9 while
failing to save par on a missed-green mishap on No. 7.
But Ikeda, gearing up for the Santi Cup next week, rebounded with back-to-back
birdies from No. 15 for a 142 aggregate as she pounced on Ardina’s three-over
card to move within 18 holes from duplicating her victory here in 2008.
Ardina, who matched Ikeda’s opening 69, dropped to 144 while Malaysian Diana Tam
moved up to third with a 148 after shooting the day’s best score of 72.
Jayvie Agojo also bounced back with a 73 after a 76 but stood seven shots off
the pace at 149 followed by Lovelynn Guioguio (74-150), Sarah Ababa (76-151) and
local bet Celeste Lo (77-153).
Becierra, the former Hong Kong Open champion, made four birdies but had too many
bogeys and a double-bogey but his 76 and a 150 proved enough to put him two
strokes ahead of Villaber, who had a 152 after a 77.
Youthful Alexes Nallos caught up Villaber in third with a 152 after a 76 while
Malaysian Lam Yu Shuen shot a 78 for a 153 and Peter Tan, another local bet,
stood at 154 after a second straight 77.(pr)

Dabawenya, Ardina pace Karambunai Open
Dabawenya Chihiro Ikeda and Dottie Ardina fired identical three-under 69 to share the lead
at the start of the 10th Karambunai Amateur Open 2010 at the Nexus Golf Club and
Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Friday.
Ikeda and Ardina, priming up for next week’s Santi Cup in Kuala Lumpur, gunned
down five birdies each to negate their two bogey mishaps as they posted a big
six-stroke lead over ICTSI teammate Sarah Ababa.
Winner of last week’s Malaysian Junior Open, Ababa struggled with a three-over
75 for third while Lovelynn Guioguio and the comebacking Jayvie Agojo stood a
shot farther back at 76, along with local bets Diana Tam and Celeste Lo, who all
had 76s.
Ikeda, a former winner of this annual event, hit 15 greens in regulation and
finished with a 34-35 round highlighted by three straight birdies from No. 5.
Ardina, on the other hand, had a solid stint on the sleek surface, making 28
putts, including a pair of birdies from 15 feet on Nos. 13 and 18, as she braced
for a showdown with Ikeda heading into the last two days of the 54-hole
tournament.
The ICTSI bets also lorded it over the field in the men’s side with Dante
Becierra seizing a one-shot lead over teammate Peter Villaber with a 74, marred
by four three-putts.
Villaber also groped for form on the greens, making three three putts for a 75
for joint second with local bets Lam Yu Shuen and Alan Chin Jun Nian.

Kenneth Kano and Art Arbole made a pair of 80s.(pr)
