World Am feat caps ICTSI team’s 2010 campaign

A joint eighth-place finish by the ladies squad in the World Amateurs, the
country's best in over four decades, highlighted another solid season for the
ICTSI golf team that also saw it rack up over 30 victories on the local turf
and abroad.
The men’s team picked up a bit after a struggling campaign in 2009 with former
Hong Kong Am Open champion Dante Becierra taking three low amateur honors on the
ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour. But the ladies squad continued to anchor the team’s
inspiring campaign on the international stage.
"We actually slowed down towards the end of the year,” said BongLopez, the
man in charge of the International Container TerminalServices, Inc. golf
program. “But overall, it was another solid year although there were a number of
near misses which could’ve gone our way.”
Dottie Ardina, Chihiro Ikeda and Mia Piccio again carried the load for the
youth-laden squad, pooling for eight individual titles and three team
championships. But it was their combination in the World Am
in Argentina that produced a lasting mark for RP golf that made up for their
poor performance in the Asian Games where they wound up sixth.
Lopez said it was “mission accomplished,” citing her wards’ final round rebound
in the World Am. “They worked hard for this.”

Hard work also produced a number of victories for members of the squad
with US-based Cyna Rodriguez sparking the win run with a runaway victory in
the Philippine Ladies Amateur Open at Southwoods.
Ikeda followed suit with a win in the DHL Open then went on to pocket the
Singapore Am individual title while powering the Phl to the team crown in
the same tournament and in the New Zealand Foursomes tilt.
Ardina won the Southern Ladies, the Karambunai Am, Aaron Baddeley
Juniors and Women’s Trans-Junior titles while Piccio swept the stroke play and
match play crowns in the Women’s Trans Amateur Championship in Arizona.
Andie Unson actually produced the most number of wins in the team, topping
the Optimist Junior International, San Diego Masters, Accusport Junior (AJGA)
and two Jungolf Interclub legs while clinching a berth in the US Women’s
Amateur.
Other winners were Alex Nallos (Jungolf, Malaysia Jrs), Carl Santos-Ocampo
(low amateur at PGT Mimosa and Canlubang legs), Daniella Uy (Singha Jrs and
Phil. Ladies Open and Singapore Jrs), Sarah Ababa (Malaysia Jrs) and Sun
Choi (Indonesia Jrs and Jungolf Tat Filipinas leg).
Formed in 2005 after the Manila SEA Games, the golf stable has now a pool of 20
players, including nine ladies, who form the core of the national team. Backing
up the team are ICTSI's corporate communication chief Narlene Soriano and
assistant coaches Nestor Mendoza, Cassius Casas, Carmelette Villaroman and
JR Tanpinco.
Lopez vowed to better their 2010 showing in 2011 with a series of
international tournaments lined up although he stressed the need for his wards
to focus on physical fitness, saying; “I always believe that being physically
fit gives one the edge.”(pr)

Murakami cops Open plum, foils Dabawenyo, Tabuena

Artemio Murakami kept the momentum of his fiery third round charge
and closed out with a bogey-free 68, bagging the Philippine Open title via a
two-stroke victory over last year’s winner Elmer Salvador of Davao City at the Valley Golf
Club course in Antipolo, Saturday.
Sustaining the form that netted him a seven-under 65 Friday and pulled him
within one off Salvador and amateur Miguel Tabuena, Murakami outgunned the
erstwhile joint leaders with four birdies in the first 10 holes then hung tough
with clutch pars to annex the crown on a 72-hole aggregate of 11-under 277.
He won P350,000, lower than the P448,500 bounty he pocketed in winning the
Mercedes Benz Tour leg at Manila Southwoods early in the year. But his Open romp
enabled him to join the elite circle of winners in the country’s premier golfing
event long considered as Asia’s oldest championship.

"Its all about focus,” said Murakami after completing his comeback from the back
of the pack fuelled by a stirring 65 in the third round. “I guess it was my
focus in the final two days that did it for me."

Salvador, who kept the rallying Murakami at bay with a gutsy 70 Friday, birdied
No. 2 but reeled back in the face of Murakami’s sustained charge. He birdied the
par-3 18th from 12 feet for a 71 and a 279, settling for a runner-up finish
worth P224,400.
Two-time champion Frankie Minoza, whom Murakami looks up to as idol and mentor,
shot a 70 for solo third at 280 worth P125,000.
"I'm happy with my effort," said Minoza, who is set to join the US Seniors
Champions Tour next year.
Murakami, who regained his Asian Tour card by topping the Qualifying School last
January but has struggled on the region’s lucrative circuit all season long,
calmly made a three-foot par putt on the 18th then raised his hands – the left
holding his trusted putter and the right his black visor – in triumph before a
big appreciative crowd that included Minoza, who has seen his ward blossomed
from a mediocre golfer into a seasoned player.
"It's a good feeling to finally win it," said Murakami, who birdied Nos. 3, 4, 6
and 10 to wrest control of the big number of title contenders.
He added that luck also played a role in his title win as three of his drives
bounced back onto the fairway after hitting the trees. “I guess I got a bit
lucky, too,” he said.
Murakami's win also foiled Salvador's bid to become the Open's first
back-to-back winner since the late Celestino Tugot won four straight from 1955.
"I tried my best to win it again this year but he (Murakami) really played
well," said the soft-spoken Salvador, who fell short of his bid to give himself
another big birthday present today the way he did last year when he topped last
year’s Open at Mt. Malarayat,

Tabuena, who humbled the pros with a 67 in the third round to tie Salvador at
the helm, cracked with a 73 and settled for fourth overall with a 281, still a
big feat for a 16-year-old wonder who won the silver medal in the recent Asian
Games.
Tabuena also bungled his chance to become the Open’s first amateur champion
since Hsu Sheng San of Chinese Taipei won in 1967.
"I missed the fairways early, maybe that cost me my chance," said Tabuena, who
ran away with the low amateur honors, four clear off James Wang.
"But overall, I'm happy with the way I performed considering what happened today
(yesterday)," he said.
Orlan Sumcad and Richard Sinfuego wound up joint fifth at 282 after a 72 and 71,
respectively.

Former champion Cassius Casas fired a tournament-best nine-under 63 to salvage
joint seventh with Elmer Saban, who matched par 72, at 284.
Rounding up the Top 10 with 285s were Joenard Rates (71), Wang (69) and Ferdie
Aunzo (69) while Marvin Dumandan and Mhark Fernando wound up with 286s after 75
and 73, respectively.(pr)

Tabuena gains lead share as Salvador fumbles

16-YEAR-OLD MIGUEL TABUENA.

Defending champion Elmer Salvador lost a four-stroke lead at the back
as he lost his putting touch for a 70, enabling youthful Miguel Tabuena to gain
a share of it with a solid five-under 67 in the third round of the Philippine
Open at the Valley Golf Club in Antipolo, Friday.
The Dabawenyo fumbled with three bogeys in the last seven holes and hobbled with a
37, blowing the chance to build a big cushion heading into the final 18 holes
for a clear crack at the first back-to-back Open feat in more than five decades.
Instead, his shaky windup allowed Tabuena to fuel his own bid of becoming the
first amateur in 43 years to win the fabled event as the reigning Asian Games
silver medalist continued to dish out fine form that impressed no less than
two-time champion Frankie Minoza. His 34-33 round tied him with defending
champion at the helm at eight-under 208.
It also set the stage for a wild, woolly final round chase in the P2 million
tournament sponsored by San Miguel Corp. with seven players, including two
former champions, getting a clear shot at the crown worth P350,000.
Artemio Murakami, going for his second major win this year after topping the
Mercedes Benz Tour leg at Manila Southwoods early in the year, fired the
tournament-best score of 65, an eagle-spiked round that pushed him to within one
at 209.
"I had a good start but I just couldn't sustain it,” said Salvador, seeking to
become the first player to win the Open back-to-back since the late Celestino
Tugot scored four straight from 1955. “But the good thing is I'm still in the
lead going into the final day."

The problem is a slew of others is out to foil his bid.
There is Tabuena, a teener dishing out a man’s game. Falling farther behind by
four at the turn, the 16-year-old jungolfer, two flights behind Salvador,
matched the defending champion’s back-to-back birdie binge from No. 10, rolled
in a delicate birdie putt on No. 14 before making four clutch pars for a 33 and
a 67.
Murakami, 27, likewise boosted his bid for a maiden Open title, bucking a bogey
start with six birdies and an eagle from a superb Hybrid second shot from 220
yards that landed six feet near the cup. He made that put on No. 7 then birdied
the next two holes for a 32.
After he birdied the par-5 11th and a string of pars, Murakami wielded his hot
putter once more, closing out with back-to-back birdies for that 65.
"I participated here with a goal of winning my first Open and I think I have a
strong chance of accomplishing it," said Murakami, who recovered from an opening
round of 74 with a 70 Thursday.
Frankie Minoza, who co-led the first round with 1990 champion Robert Pactolerin,
Orlan Sumcad and amateur Sonnie Boy Gialon, also bounced back into contention
with a 69 for a 210 for joint fourth with Sumcad, firing a 71, just two strokes
adrift.
“It’s anybody’s ball game,” said Minoza, who was so impressed with Tabuena’s
game.
"He can hit, his focus is impressive," said Minoza. "He plays like a veteran,
I'm surprised he's just 16 years old, he's really playing maturely."
Marvin Dumandan also shot an eagle-aided 66 to fan his title hopes at 211 in a
tie with Richard Sinfuego, who had a 70, while Pactolerin turned in a bogey-free
69 for a 212 in a tie with Elmer Saban, who also had a 66, spiked by a birdie on
the par-3 finishing hole.
Antonio Asistio II, who shared the second round lead with Salvador, had a
horrendous four-over 76 in a day of torrid scoring, tumbling down to joint ninth
at 214 Dimitrio Sanchez (70) and Joenard Rates (72).
The day, however, belonged to Tabuena, out to become the Open's first amateur
champion since Hsu Sheng San of Chinese Taipei won in 1967 when he upstaged
Tugot in a gripping finale. The Late Luis “Golem” Silverio was the first
Filipino amateur to win the Open in 1966.
"I'm happy with the way I'm playing, my driving and putting are doing the work
for me," said Tabuena. "I'm also excited and surprised that I'm in contention, I
never really thought I'll have this big chance of winning against the best."
It would have been a flawless day for Tabuena if not for an errant drive on No.
5, one of the rare times he had a mishit off the mound.(pr)

Dabawenyo, Asistio take charge

ELMER SALVADOR

ANTONIO ASISTIO

Dabawenyo Elmer Salvador, seeking to become the first player in more than five decades to win back-to-back Philippine Open crowns, primed up for his title-retention bid as he fired a second straight three-under 69 to share the lead with rookie pro Antonio Asistio halfway through the P2 million event at the Valley Golf Club in Antipolo, Thursday.
With former champions and seasoned campaigners Frankie Minoza and Robert Pactolerin dropping off the lead with over-par rounds, Salvador took charge with a six-under 138, sparking hopes for a first repeat winner of the fabled event since the late Celestino Tugot racked up four straight from 1955.
“"My plan is to play consistently," said the soft-spoken Salvador in Filipino, who beat Dutch Guido Van der Valk at Mt. Malarayat to capture last year’s edition of the event sponsored by San Miguel Corp.
But out to foil his bid is a slew of talented players, including Asistio, who is trying to become one of the youngest winners of the country’s premier golfing event. The former national team standout turned in the day’s best score of four-under 68 to tie Salvador at the helm, one clear of unfancied Orlan Sumcad.
“I’m hitting the ball really well. The best it has ever been,” said the 21-year-old Asistio, who cracked under pressure and blew his title bid in last month’s ICTSI-Canlubang Golf Invitational, the final leg of this year’s local circuit.
Sumcad, who shared the lead with Minoza, Pactolerin and Dabawenyo amateur Zanie Boy Gialon in the first round of the P2 million event organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Phils., stayed in the hunt for a maiden victory with a 139 after a 71 that included four birdies against a bogey and a double-bogey.
Rufino Bayron slowed down with a 71 after a 69 for solo fourth at 140 while Minoza faltered at the back with a 38 for a one-over 73 and slid to joint fifth with Richard Sinfuego (71), Ferdie Aunzo (70) and Asian Games silver medalist Miguel Tabuena (71).
"It's not that bad, there's still two rounds to go," said Minoza, winner here in 1998 at Riviera and 2007 at Wack Wack, who recently qualified for the US Seniors Champions Tour.
The 49-year-old Pactolerin, who topped this event exactly two decades ago at Wack Wack, struggled with a three-over 75 and slipped to the group of 143 scorers, who included Anthony Fernando (70) and Russell Honrubia (73).
The 22-year-old Gialon, meanwhile, failed to sustain his hot start and skied to a five-over 77 for a 145.
Five players pooled a 142 for a share of ninth with Rey Pagunsan and Richard Abaring matching par 72s, Joenard Rates carding a 73, Albin Engino firing a 70 and Rolando Marabe firing a 69.
A total of 72 players, including 58 pros, made the cut at 153 although the other fancied bets stood too far behind the joint leaders, including Artemio Murakami (70-144), Marvin Dumandan (69-145), rookie pro Mhark Fernando (73-145) and former champion Cassius Casas (72-147).
The event is backed by Pagcor, Orient Pearl, Amalgamated Motors (Phils.) Inc., Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Rudy Project, Yamaha Golf Car, Kilton Motor Corp, Phil. Span Asia Carrier Corp, E.L. Enterprises, EFC and friends of NGAP with Club Car Phls. as hole-in-one sponsor and A Round of Golf as media partner. Motorola is the event's 2-way radio supplier.(pr)

Minoza, Davao's Gialon share Open lead

                                                                    FRANKIE MINOZA

Two-time champion Frankie Minoza of  Bukidnon fired a four-under 68 to tie former winner Robert Pactolerin and two unfancied bets, including amateur Zanie Boy Gialon of Davao City in the lead at the start of the start of the P2 million Philippine Open, Wednesday at the Valley Golf Club course in Antipolo.
Minoza, riding the crest of a string of solid stints abroad, including a joint runner-up finish in Florida last month that netted him a berth in next year’s US Seniors Champions Tour, put in a six-birdie performance highlighted by a birdie-birdie windup.
That fiery finish more than made up for his disastrous double-bogey mishap on No. 14, putting him in the company of Pactolerin, who came out smoking in one of the morning flights, the power-hitting Orlan Sumcad and Gialon, one of the members of the ICTSI-The Country Club squad.
"I feel I'm hitting better now," said Minoza, who skipped the pro-am event Tuesday due to ear infection but was allowed to play this week.
Elmer Salvador, seeking to become the first back-to-back champion in more than five decades, put himself in early contention as he turned in a three-under 69 for a three-way tie for fifth with Joenard Rates and Rufino Bayron.
Young Miguel Tabuena, the silver medalist in the recent Asian Games, held his ground against Minoza and shot a two-under 70 to join the group of Antonio Asistio II, Russell Honrubia, Richard Abaring, Rey Pagunsad and Richard Sinfuego.
Sumcad, one of the less-fancied but long hitters on the local circuit, gunned down an eagle and made six birdies to negate his four bogeys in probably his best start in years.
But the day belonged to 21-year-old Gialon, a former caddy at Apo golf in talent-rich Davao who joined the ICTSI stable of coach Bong Lopez last year. He rammed in six birdies against two bogeys to find himself alongside the most feared man in the 123-player fold.
"I'm happy with my effort," said Gialon, who missed grabbing the solo lead after he three-putted the tough par-3 18th.
Minoza, who turns 51 late this month, played true to form in the early going and made the turn at four-under. But he got into trouble on No. 14 and holed out with a double-bogey on the 14th.
But the veteran campaigner recovered in time, coming through with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to regain a share of the lead in the event sponsored by San Miguel Corp. and backed by Pagcor, Orient Pearl, Amalgamated Motors (Phils.) Inc., Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Rudy Project, Yamaha Golf Car, Kilton Motor Corp, EFC and friends of NGAP and Club Car Phls. as hole-in-one sponsor and A Round of Golf as media partner. Motorola is the event’s 2-way radio supplier.
Pactolerin, whose trip here is backed by Royal Golf of Zamboanga, was likewise impressed with his strong opening day effort.
"I feel relaxed and I'm hitting the ball well," he said.(pr)

Pros gear up for Phl Open showdown

Bukidnon Province's Frankie Minoza and company get their final chance to test the tough Valley Golf Club layout in the Philippine Open pro-am tournament Tuesday, Dec. 14, hoping to make the necessary adjustments in their respective games in time for Wednesday’s start of the P2 million event.

The par-72 championship layout offers a different kind of challenge to the strong 120-player field with its rolling hills, meandering brooks and unpredictable putting surface. This marks the fourth time that VGC will stage the Open after hosting it in 1975, 1983 and 1991.

Minoza, chasing his third Open crown in 12 years, looms as the player to beat in the country’s premier and Asia’s oldest golfing event owning to his form which netted him a spot in next year’s US Seniors Champions Tour.

Others seeing action in the 18-hole pro-am are defending champion Elmer Salvador of Davao City and title contenders Artemio Murakami, Marvin Dumandan, Benjie Magada, former champion Cassius Casas, Ferdie Aunzo, Rey Pagunsan and young turks Antonio Asistio II, Gene Bondoc, Michael Bibat.

They will be paired with the amateurs making up the event's sponsors, VIPs, Valley Golf Club members and NGAP board members with fabulous prizes staked for both the pros and their amateur partners.

Keen competition is seen in the tournament proper with no one holding a distinct advantage over a course that also changes in character, especially in the presence of the wind.

The event is sponsored by San Miguel Corp. and backed by Pagcor, Orient Pearl, Amalgated Motors (Phils.)  Inc., Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Rudy Project, EFC and friends of NGAP and Club Car Phls. as hole-in-one sponsor and A Round of Golf as media partner. Motorola is the event’s 2-way radio supplier.

The Phl Open will also mark the debut for former national champion and many-time Phl team spearhead Mhark Fernando while a host of jungolfers will also be joining the title hunt as part of their training under the NGAP youth program.

Miguel Tabuena, who won the silver medal in the recent Asian Games, heads the youth brigade that includes the likes of  Andres Saldana, Miggy Yee, Jobim Carlos, AR Ramos, Jahns Keanu and reigning national champion Clyde Mondilla.

Focus will also be on the young golfers headed by Miguel Tabuena and the youngest player in the field  11-year-old Lester Lagman, a Junior World campaigner in San Diego and in the Optimist Junior International in Florida.(pr)

Asiad silver medalist vies in Phl Open

Asian Games silver medalist Miguel Tabuena will lead a crack squad of junior players slugging it out with the country's leading shotmakers in the Philippine Open which unfolds Dec. 15 at the Valley Golf Club in Antipolo.
The event will be Tabuena’s first since winning the individual silver medal in the Asiad last month with the 16-year-old shotmaker hoping to flaunt the form he showed in Guangzhou against a field teeming with talent.
Tabuena, who lead in the first two days in China but faltered in the third round before hanging tough in the final day to keep the silver, will be joined in the hunt for top honors in the P2 million event by fellow jungolfers Andres Saldana, Miggy Yee, Jobim Carlos, AR Ramos, Jahns Keanu, Gio Gandionco and Clyde Mondilla, the reigning national champion.
“It has been the NGAP’s task to provide these jungolfers a venue where they could hone their talent and skills. By competing in the Phl Open, we hope to toughen up our young player for future tournaments abroad,” said tournament director Pablo Soon, also a director of the National Golf Association of the Phils.
Tabuena and company are actually training under the ICTSI-Cangolf program headed by Tommy Manotoc, also the head of NGAP’s youth and developmental pool.
The junior team actually won the Lion City Cup, the junior side of the Putra Cup, in Malaysia recently and is all primed up to prove its worth next week.
But the jungolfers will be up a formidable roster of players, headed by Frankie Minoza and five of the top 10 players in this year’s ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour Order of Merit rankings, headed by Marvin Dumandan, Artemio Murakami, Benjie Magada, Ferdie Aunzo and Cassius Casas.
The other amateurs in the fold are the ICTSI-The Country Club mainstays Dante Becierra, Peter Villaber, Carl Santos-Ocampo, Charles Hong, Zanie Boy Gialon and Alexes Nallos and Asian Games and World Am veteran Jerson Balasabas.
The Phl Open field will have a minimum of 120 players, including pros and amateurs. For details, contact NGAP at 02-5179778/5577849, Susan (0917-5607074) or Charlyn (0922-8234758)  or telefax 02-7065926 or email ngapgolf@hotmail.com.
