Storm hit World Am reduced to 54 holes

The Philippines got stranded in the second round of the World Amateur Golf
Championships reduced to 54 holes due to stormy weather with Denmark taking the
provisional lead with a 280 after a 141 at the Buenos Aires Golf Club in
Argentina Friday.
Play was first suspended at 9 a.m. (Argentina time) due to thunderstorm and
resumed at 11:50 a.m. only to be stopped again on 4:50 p.m. due to lightning,
forcing the organizers to suspend play and reduce the 72-hole competition to 54
holes.
The RP golfers, who had a horrible 12-over 156 in the first round, pooled a
five-over card when play was halted with Mhark Fernando scoring a two-over card
after six holes and Jhonnel Ababa and Judson Eustaquio carding three-over 39s at
the turn.

Denmark, with a three-under 141, made its move in the rain to gain the lead at
280. The Danes were among the 35 of the 69 teams in the field to complete play.
They hold a lead over teams that failed to finish their rounds. Canada stood at
five-under after three holes and first day leader France was at three-under
through nine holes.
The second round was suspended twice and then called for the day because of
dangerous weather and course conditions. It will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Following completion of the round and a re-draw based on scores, the third round
will begin in the mid-to-late afternoon. The leading teams will play at Buenos
Aires Golf Club in the third round and the lower half will play at Olivos Golf
Club. The championship is now reduced to 54 holes and will conclude on Sunday.
The United States jumped to a provisional tie for fifth at one-under-par 285
while New Zealand stood at even par 286.
The Philippines, whose campaign is sanctioned by the NGAP and backed by ICTSI
and Philippine Sports Commission, wavered early with a 156 in the first round
and is hardpressed to do better in the second round to bounce back into
contention.
But with playing condition proving tougher, the RP golfers would need to toughen
up at resumption of play to improve on their opening 51st place effort Thursday.
Team RP finished joint 27th last time in Australia but the ICTSI-backed ladies
team of Dottie Ardina, Chihiro Ikeda and Mia Piccio made a superb joint eighth
finish in last week’s Espirito Santo Trophy, the best-ever by the team in the
biennial event.(pr)

RP golfers fumble in World Am opener

The Philippines turned in its worst start in the last five stagings of the World
Amateur Golf Championships as it hobbled with a 12-over 156 and fell to joint
51st in the Espirito Santo Trophy at the Buenos Aires Golf Club in Argentina
Thursday.
Mhark Fernando made a five-over 77 and Jhonnel Ababa limped home with a
seven-over 79 for the team’s 156 output, 19 strokes behind France which pooled a
seven-under 137 at the par-72 BAGC.
Canada also had a 137 but it assembled its five-under card at the par-71 Olivos
Golf Club, giving France an early two-stroke lead in the three-to-play,
two-to-count format event.
Judson Eustaquio didn’t count with an 80 as Team RP dropped into a tie with
unfancied Kenya in 51st place, its worst since the team of Jay Bayron, Michael
Bibat and Marvin Dumandan opened with a 10-over 154 and wound up 38th in the
2006 World Am in South Africa.
The RP golfers never recovered from a poor start at the backside of the
wind-raked layout with Fernando carding a six-over 41 from two double bogeys and
two bogeys against a bogey.

Eustaquio opened with a birdie on No. 10 but made a double bogey on No. 12 then
bogeyed three of the next six holes for a 40.
Ababa, in his final stint in the amateurs, stumbled with two bogeys and two
double bogeys and wound up with a birdie-less 42.
The 28-year-old Fernando, who will also turn pro after next month’s Asian Games,
hit back-to-back birdies from No. 1 but made three bogeys against a birdie in
the next seven holes for a 36 and a 77.
Ababa settled down with two bogeys against a birdie but hardly improved with a
37 and 79 while Eustaquio gunned down back-to-back birdies from No. 6 but had
four bogeys and a double-bogey for a second straight 40.
Still, the troika, whose campaign is sanctioned by National Golf Association of
the Phils. and backed by ICTSI and the Philippine Sports Commission, hopes to
improve as it tackles the shorter Olivos layout in the second round of the
72-hole championship Friday.(pr)

RP golfers open bid in World Am

The Philippines opens its campaign in the Eisenhower Trophy, the men’s side of
the World Amateur Golf Team Championships, which begins Thursday with 70 teams
slugging it out for top honors at the Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf
Club in Argentina.
Hopes are high for the team of Mhark Fernando, Dabawenyo Jhonnel Ababa and US-based Judson
Eustaquio as the troika tries to duplicate the RP ladies’ best-ever finish of
joint eighth in the Espirito Santo Trophy last week.
Dottie Ardina, Dabawenya Chihiro Ikeda and Mia Piccio pooled a four-day total of 575 as
the ICTSI-backed team shared eighth place with Germany and New Zealand, the
country’s best since the 1968 team finished ninth in Australia.
“They are ready but they had to contend not only with the talent laden field and
a tough course but also the chilly weather here,” said NGAP official and team
captain Pablo Soon.
The RP men’s squad actually turned in a pair of third-place finishes in 1984 and
2002 but has struggled in the last three stagings of the biennial event, winding
up joint 23rd in 2004, ending up 38th in 2006 and sharing 27th place the last
time in Australia on a team built around Rufino Bayron, Ferdie Aunzo and Jerson
Balasabas.
But Fernando, Ababa and Eustaquio are all-geared up for this week’s event, a
three-to-play, two-to-count format tournament spread over four days.
Ababa, in fact, hopes to cap his stint in the ranks on a high note as the
veteran internationalist has decided to turn pro after this event.
Fernando, on the other hand, will leave the ranks after the Asian Games next
month with the former national champion raring to build up momentum and boost
his confidence with a solid showing this week in time for the Guangzhou Asiad.
Eustaquio, a former Florida Amateur champion, is also out to prove his worth in
the tournament featuring the world’s leading teams, headed by defending champion
Scotland and many-time titlist United States.
The team, handled by Tommy Manotoc and whose campaign is sanctioned by the
National Golf Association of the Phils. and sponsored by ICTSI, drew a morning
tee-off time at 7:30 a.m.  with Ababa kicking off RP’s campaign at the BAGC
against Jose Rodriguez of Puerto Rico and Dutch Robin Kind.
Eustaquio is paired with Robi Calvesbert and Fernand Osther while Fernando is
set to start with Rafael Campos and Daan Huizing.(pr)

RP Open returns to Valley Dec. 15-18

The Philippine Open, the country's premier golf championship, will be held Dec.
15-18  with Asia's oldest golfing event making its return to the Valley Golf
Club in Antipolo in nearly two decades.
Elmer Salvador will try to defend the crown he won over a stellar field
last year at Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club in Lipa, Batangas but will face
a highly charged field coming off a year-long campaign on the
ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour.
Registration is ongoing with fees pegged at P3,000 for local pros and $100
for foreign entries, according to the organizing National Golf Association of
the Phils. For details, contact NGAP (Susan Facundo) at 7065926 or 0917-5607074.
Salvador held off Dutchman Guido Van der Valk in the final round to chalk up
a three-stroke victory last year, capping a banner season that saw the Davaoeno
shotmaker also run away with the Order of Merit crown on the local circuit.
Last year's field that included the cream of the country's pro crop will be
back again in December, led by Frankie Minoza, Angelo Que, Tony Lascuna,
Artemio Murakami, Mars Pucay, Marvin Dumandan, Jay Bayron, Cassius Casas and
Robert Pactolerin.
Former national champion Mhark Fernando and Jhonnel Ababa are also expected
to join the hunt for the crown as they make their debut on the pro tour.
American Dennis Paulson humbled the local pros and other top foreign players
to capture the crown in the 1991 edition of the annual event at Valley, which
is expected to provide a different kind of challenge for the men of the tour.
Valley last hosted a pro tournament in 2009 with Salvador outlasting Ababa then
pulling off a two-stroke victory over Gene Bondoc with an eight-under 208 total.
The traditional pro-am tournament, featuring the leading pros and officials
of the event's sponsors and guests, will be held Dec. 14.
Like last year, the NGAP is pushing through with the Open at the end of the
year although it will not be a part of the Asian Tour for the second straight
time.
The Philippine Open used to be a leg of the Asian Tour with the local
players slugging it out with region's leading shotmakers. But after 2008, the AT
and NGAP officials had failed to strike a new deal, leaving the Open without
the Asian stars and out of the Asian Tour calendar.

Gutsy Pinays turn in best finish of joint 8th

Gutsy Pinays turn in best finish of joint 8th

Dottie Ardina birdied two of the last four holes to fire a one-under 71 and
power the Philippines to a best-ever joint eighth finish in over four decades in
the World Amateurs Golf Team Championships topped by South Korea in Argentina
Saturday.
Chihiro Ikeda also birdied the par-5 15th to card a 74 at the Olivos Golf Club
as Team RP closed out with a decent one-over 145 in another brutal condition for
a 72-hole haul of one-under 575.
That was 29 strokes behind Korea’s amazing 30-under 546 but it proved enough to
better the country’s previous best finish of ninth in 1968 in Australia.
RP, then composed of Ikeda, Louise Manalo and Anya Tanpinco, placed joint 19th,
also in Australia, in 2008.
Mia Piccio, who anchored the team’s fine start with a 71, failed to count for
the third straight day with a 75.
“Mission accomplished,” said RP and ICTSI team coach Bong Lopez, who credited
her wards’ final round rebound after they succumbed to pressure and the tough
condition at Buenos Aires Golf Club layout in the third round.
“They really worked hard for this. The course and the pin position were super
tough not to mention the chilly weather and the wind,” said Lopez. “They knew
putting would carry them through the Top 10 and they delivered in the closing
holes.”
Ardina, 16, bucked her two-bogey mishaps with three birdies, including the last
from seven feet for that 71, as she wound up also tied for eighth in the
individual competition with a 286 aggregate.
Piccio, who turned 19 Saturday, wound up joint 48th at 295 while Ikeda, also 19,
finished a stroke farther back at 296 for a share of 53rd.
South Korea capped its domination of the event with a 139 for that 546 and a
17-stroke romp over the United States, who had a 563 after a 143.
Han Jung-eun shot a 70-275, Kim Ji-hee turned in a 71-277 and Kim Hyun-soo made
a 69-278 as they took the top three placers for a rare sweep of the individual
race, making them the team to beat in next monthAsian Games.
Sweden (146), France (147) and South Africa (148) finished tied for third at 572
while Spain placed sixth with a 573 after a 148 and Canada pooled a 143 for solo
sevent at 574.
Germany struggled with a 152 while New Zealand assembled a 142 to join the
Philippines, who campaigned was sponsored by ICTSI and sanctioned by the
National Golf Association of the Phils., at eighth.
Lopez said Team RP’s joint eighth feat augurs well for their Asian Games’ bid
although he admitted that the Koreans will indeed be tough to beat. Ardina and
Piccio headed straight to the US and will arrive in Manilaon Nov. 10 before
going to Guangzhou while Ikeda will toughen up by playing in a couple of more
tournaments.(pr)

RP ladies sputter with 151, slip to 9th

The Philippines turned from awesome to awful as it limped home with a seven-over
151 after a sizzling nine-under 135 as it reeled back to ninth place after three
rounds of the World Amateurs Golf Team Championships in Argentina Friday.
Dottie Ardina, whose flawless 65 at the Buenos Aires Golf Club lifted Team RP
from joint ninth to solo fourth halfway through the Espirito Santo Trophy, lost
her touch after a birdie on No. 3, fumbling with four bogeys and a double-bogey
and didn’t count with a five-over 77, also at the BAGC.
But Dabawenya Chihiro Ikeda and Mia Piccio didn’t fare well either with the former turning
in a roller-coaster round of 75 and the latter failing to find her rhythm for
the second straight day and winding up with a 76.
That 151 aggregate dropped the ICTSI-backed team to ninth at 430 in a tie with
Mexico, which pooled a 149, even as South Korea poised itself for a runaway
victory with another sterling round of 134 for a stirring 25-under 407 total.
With Kim Hyun-soo firing six birdies in the first 10 holes for a 66 and Kim
Ji-hee scoring a hole-in-one on No. 14 for a 68 and Han Jung-eun knocking down
two eagles for another 68, one of which counted for the team, Korea pulled away
from the US with a 13-shot lead heading into the final round of the biennial
event.
US wavered with a two-over 146 but remained in second at 420 while Germany also
kept its place at third with a 423 after a 146. South Africa shot a 143 to move
up to fourth with a 424 while Argentina (144), Spain (138) and France (141) tied
for fifth at 425.
Defending champion Sweden stood at eighth with 426 after a 145 while four
strokes back at 430 are Mexico and RP, seeking to improve its best finish of
ninth in the 1968 edition in Australia.
“They had a good start but failed to sustain it. Dottie and Chihiro struggled
with their iron game and Mia continued to struggle on the greens, missing at
least three makeable birdie putts,” said RP and ICTSI team coach Bong Lopez.
Despite the poor round, Lopez remains confident of a big finish by his wards,
especially Ikeda, who recovered from a 39 with three straight birdies from No.
10, only to yield them back with three straight bogeys from No. 15.
Team RP, whose stint is sponsored by ICTSI and sanctioned by the National Golf
Association of the Phils., actually went three-under after three holes with
Ikeda gunning down a birdie on the opening hole and Ardina making her eighth
straight in two days on No. 3.
But things turned sour for the Filipinas as Ikeda fumbled with a bogey and two
double bogeys against a birdie after nine holes and Ardina dropping two strokes
on Nos. 7 and 9.
Piccio, the team’s top scorer in the first round with a 71, couldn’t get her
game going and went out with a 38 before adding another 38 for that 76, marred
by three bogeys and a double bogey against a lone birdie.
Ardina also slid from joint fifth to a share of 15th in the individual
competition with a 54-hole haul of 215, 10 strokes behind Jung, who had a 205
and a one-shot lead over Ji.(pr)

Ardina sizzles with flawless 65, powers RP to fourth; Davao's Ikeda rebounds with a two-under 70

Dottie Ardina put on a class act on the world stage, firing a bogey-free seven
under par 65 as the Philippines surged to a best-ever spot at fourth with a
nine-under 279 halfway through the World Amateur Golf Team Championships in
Argentina Thursday.
Ardina joined the South Koreans in ripping the Buenos Aires Golf Club course
with a run of low scores as the former Junior World champion rammed in seven
birdies sparked by a 20-footer on No. 4 and capped by superb approach shot on
the 18th that stopped within four feet.
“She played excellent golf, her all-around game was close to being perfect,”
said RP and ICTSI team coach Bong Lopez of his prized ward, who struggled a bit
with a 73 in the opening round at the nearby Olivos Golf Club layout Wednesday.
With Chihiro Ikeda rebounding from a 77 with a two-under 70, Team RP pooled a
nine-under 135 and jumped from joint ninth to solo fourth with a 279 as they
head back to the Olivos course for the third round action Friday.
Mia Piccio, who led Team RP’s impressive first round performance with a gutsy
one-under 71, groped for her putting form and didn’t count with a 73 for the
squad, whose campaign is sponsored by the International Container Terminal
Services, Inc. and sanctioned by the National Golf Association of the Phils.
Korea fired a record-setting 16-under-par 128, also at the BAGC, for a 15-under
273, one stroke ahead of first round leader USA, which had a 274 after a 138
while Germany matched RP’s 135 for third at 277.
The Koreans shattered the record for a single-round of 134 set by the US in the
second round in 1998 as Jee-Hi Kim shot a nine-under 63, also a new mark, and
Jung-Eun Han added a 65.
Ardina’s 65 also lifted her from a share of 33rd to joint fifth in the
individual race as she assembled a 138, just four shots behind Jessica Korda of
the US, who had a 134 after a 66. Argentina’s Manuela Carbajo Re (67), Canada’s
Christine Wong (65) and Han were tied at 137 followed by Ardina’s group that
includes Pia Halbig of Germany (67) and Kim.
Piccio slid from 11th to joint 23rd with a 144 while Ikeda moved up to 55th from
91st with a 147.
It was the Philippines’ best-ever effort so far in the biennial event featuring
the world’s top teams with Lopez hoping his talented squad, honed and toughened
up by a series of competitions abroad, will be able to sustain its charge in the
last 36 holes as they go for a record feat.
The Philippines’ best finish in the Espirito Santo Trophy was ninth in the 1968
edition in Australia.
“It will be tough to at least match that feat but the girls will surely give
their best shot. Dottie and Chihiro have regained their confidence after a
series of so-so performances while Mia has matured a lot and has been dishing
out solid games,” said Lopez.
Ardina, winner of the recent Karambunai Am Open in Malaysia, hit 15 greens in
regulation and used her putter 27 times, knocking down birdies on Nos. 4, 6, 8,
11, 13, 16 and 18 inside 10 feet.
After an awful first round game, Ikeda stayed late on the range and worked on
her shot-making then headed straight to the practice greens to polish her
stroke.
The Fil-Japanese shotmaker, who ruled the Singapore Am last September, birdied
the first three holes in the second round but fumbled with a bogey on No. 5, hit
another birdie on the par-3 11 before dropping another stroke on the 17th for a
34-36 card.
Piccio continued to play steady golf, hitting 14 greens in regulation but
flubbed a number of birdie opportunities and settled for a one-birdie, two-bogey
stint for a 36-37 round.(pr)

RP ladies open bid in World Am

The Philippines hopes to come out strong despite drawing a late morning tee-off
in the first two rounds of the Espirito Santo Trophy which gets under way
Wednesday (Oct. 20) at the Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club in
Argentina.
Dabawenya Chihiro Ikeda, Dottie Ardina and Mia Piccio set out at the 10:40 a.m. flight at
the Olivos layout, raring to slug it out with rivals from South Africa and
Latvia and the 50 other nations competing in the ladies side of the World
Amateur Golf Championship.
“The roughs are thick so it is imperative for the girls to hit it straight,”
said RP and ICTSI team coach Bong Lopez, confident of her wards’ chances against
the best in the world in the three-to-play, two-to-count format event.
The Philippines placed 19th in the last staging of the biennial event in
Australia, ahead of SEA Games rivals Thailand (21st), Malaysia (37th) and
Singapore (42nd), with Ikeda then teaming up with Anya Tanpinco and former RP
Ladies Open champion and now Belgium-based Louise Manalo.
This time, Lopez said RP’s chances for a top 10 finish looks good with the
ICTSI-backed RP ladies, one of the earliest teams to arrive in this second
largest South American country, ready to tackle the field and the two courses
characterized by thick roughs, tight dog-legs and fast greens.
“Emphasis will also be on the iron play and putting since the greens are so fast
you have to put your approach shots on the right slopes,” said Lopez.
Ikeda, the reigning SEA Games individual champion, and the US-based Ardina and
Piccio had the luxury of familiarizing themselves with the two layouts for four
days although the troika found both courses tough, especially if the wind come
into play.
The RP ladies tee off at 11:50 a.m. at the Buenos Aires layout in the second
round with Belgium and Colombia.
Sweden romped off with a 12-shot win over Spain in 2008 and is one of teams
again tipped to vie for the championship that drew 53 nations, topping the
previous high of 48 in Puerto Rico in 2004 and Australia two years ago.
The men’s side of the event, the Eisenhower Cup, will be played Oct. 27-30 with
the Philippines to be bannered by Mhark Fernando, Jerson Balasabas and US-based
Judson Eustaquio.
The men’s team, then led by now pros and Dabawenyos Ferdie Aunzo and Rufino Bayron and
Balasabas, finished tied for 27th with Austria and Iceland with Scotland beating
the fancied United States by nine strokes to win the crown.(pr)

Puyat makes move as Fernando, Eustaquio falter

Marcel Puyat blew a three-under card on his way out at the front and settled for
a par 71 but stood eight shots off new leader Zhiqun Lam of Singapore halfway
through the Asian Amateur Championship at the Kasumigaseki Country Club in
Saitama, Japan, Friday.
Puyat came out of a par-game at the back with three birdies in the first seven
holes at the front but he fumbled with a bogey on No. 8 then holed out with a
double-bogey on the ninth for a 35-36 round at the par-71 layout.
Still he improved from joint 24th to a share of 18th at 143, counting his first
round output of 72, although the top ICTSI bet lay way behind Lam, who dislodged
erstwhile leader and local bet Yosuke Asahi with a bogey-free 66 for a
five-under 135.

Mhark Fernando and Judson Eustaquio, whose identical one-under 70s Thursday put
them within sight of the leaders, lost their touch with 74 and 78 and tumbled
down the leaderboard at 144 and 148, respectively.
Miguel Tabuena carded a second straight 72 to join Fernando and three others in
23rd place while Jerson Balasabas also made a 72 for a 145 and made the
60-player cut in the event featuring the region’s top amateurs.
But while the five RP bets, whose campaign, is sanctioned by the National Golf
Association of the Phils. and backed by ICTSI and the Philippine Sports
Commission, made it to the weekend play, Jhonnel Ababa missed the cut with a 77
and a 155.
Fernando, the former national champion, hobbled with six bogeys against three
birdies for a 37-36 card while the US-based Eustaquio, the top Filipino finisher
here at 10th last year, made two double-bogeys, four bogeys with only a birdie
to show in a 38-40 round.
Lam rammed in five birdies in a flawless 33-33 card, his 135 total giving him a
one-stroke lead over Asaji, who had a 69 after a 67 for a 136.(pr)

Dumandan nips Lascuna in playoff, wins ICTSI crown

Davao's Marvin Dumandan rallied with a three-under 69 to force a playoff then birdied the second sudden death hole to nip fellow Dabawenyo Tony Lascuna and snatch the ICTSI Royal Northwoods Championship crown at the Royal Northwoods Golf and Country Club in San Rafael, Bulacan, Friday.
Dumandan bucked an errant drive to the rough on their third trip on the par-4 18th with a superb approach shot that stopped eight feet off the cup, made the putt then watched Lascuna flubbed his own bid from six feet to clinch the victory.
“I just got lucky,” said Dumandan in Filipino after completing his stirring come-from-behind win worth P200,000 that snapped a six-month drought on the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour.
The ICTSI-Sherwood leg winner, who shared the lead with Lascuna with a course-record tying 65 in the first round but drifted three strokes back with a mediocre second day stint, actually fell farther back by five as Lascuna threatened to blow away the field with a back-to-back birdie start.
But Dumandan held his ground and strung up with a 35-34 card, hitting two birdies at the back to force a playoff as Lascuna sputtered after a solid start, fumbling with four bogeys against two more birdies for a 72.
Lascuna missed winning it outright after a bunker-to-bunker mishap on the 72nd hole.
Both Davaoenos finished with 10-under 206s and parred the first playoff hole with Lascuna, who settled for P120,000, flubbing a birdie putt from eight feet and Dumandan from 12 feet.
It was an inspiring win for Dumandan, who led in the opening holes of the final round in the Aboitiz Invitational but cracked and wavered to finish third behind Jay Bayron and Juvic Pagunsan. He also came into this P1 million event in poor form, having missed the cut in all three legs on the Asian PGA Tour.
But he never got discouraged as he worked on his putting stroke that came to fore in the first round. Although he struggled with his putter in the second day, Dumandan regained his touch and banged in crucial putts in the final round, including the title-clincher on the second playoff hole.
“I always believe that putting will be the key to winning kasi hindi naman kami nagkakalayo sa palo,” said Dumandan.
Benjie Magada, who also outlasted Lascuna in the third playoff hole to capture the Orchard leg crown of the circuit, sponsored by ICTSI and organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc., shot the day’s best score of six-under 66 and finished tied for third with Robert Pactolerin, who fired a 67, and Elmer Salvador, who had a 71, at 209. Each received P51,600.
Richard Abaring finished sixth with a 210 after a 71 and took home P35,000 while Gene Bondoc shot a 69 for solo seventh at 211 worth P30,000.
Carl Ocampo Santos and Jobim Carlos shared the low amateur honors with a pair 71s as they wound up tied with pros Anthony Fernando (72) and Rey Pagunsan (74) for eighth at 213 in the tournament backed by MJ Carr Golf Management, Jaguar, Land Rover, Studio 23, Balls TV, Srixon/Cleveland Golf, Callaway Golf, Odyssey and Golf Punk and media partners Business Mirror, Inquirer Golf Monthly, A Round of Golf, Pinoygolfer.com and Omnisource.(pr)

Lascuna wrests 3-shot lead; Juvic quits

Tony Lascuna slowed down a bit after a course-record tying 65 with a three-under
69 but still surged ahead by three strokes as first round co-leader Marvin
Dumandan struggled to match par 72 and Juvic Pagunsan withdrew due to allergy in
the second round of the ICTSI Royal Northwoods Championship in San Rafael,
Bulacan, Thursday.
Lascuna birdied two of the last four holes at the front to negate a double-bogey
mishap on No. 4 where he drove out of bounds, giving the dusky Davaoeno
shotmaker a 34-35 card and a 36-hole aggregate of 10-under 134 at the Royal
Northwoods Golf and Country Club.
That was three shots clear of Dumandan, whose putting turned sour on a day a
host of others gained ground with under-par scores heading into the final round
of the 54-hole tournament organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.
“I suddenly lost my focus as I hit my drive on No. 4. I could’ve pulled away if
not for that double-bogey,” said Lascuna in Filipino, referring to one of his
three black marks on an otherwise solid card.
He misread an uphill, par-putt on No. 10 and three putted the 16th but rammed in
seven birdies on another fine day, two short of matching his binge in the first
round that kept him in step with Dumandan.
Winner of the ICTSI-Sherwood leg, Dumandan grappled with his balky putter all
day, making 33 putts after a sterling 27-putt effort Wednesday.
He flubbed four make-able birdie putts and had one three-putt bogey, knocking
him off the lead with a 137 after a 72.
“They just wouldn’t fall,” rued Dumandan in Filipino.
Juvic Pagunsan, who stalked Lascuna and Dumandan with a solid 67 in the first
round, decided to withdraw before tee-off time due to rashes on his face, taking
away one solid contender for the top P200,000 purse in the P1 million event
sponsored by International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
“He did everything properly. He didn’t do anything drastic,” said ICTSI-PGT
chief Colo Ventosa, referring to Pagunsan’s withdrawal which brought to mind the
latter’s caper at ICTSI-Forest Hills when he pulled out in the second without
informing the organizers.
Elmer Salvador, who ruled the ICTSI-Mt. Malarayat leg, fired a second straight
69 to put himself in contention at 138 while Rey Pagunsan, who lost by one to
Ferdie Aunzo here last year, carded a 70 for joint fourth with Richard Abaring,
who also shot a 70 for a 139.
Rufino Bayron turned in a three-under 69 and stood in sixth with a 140 while
Richard Sinfuego also shot a 69 for 141 in a tie with Anthony Fernando, who had
a 71, and amateur Dante Becierra, who also made a 71.
Former Philippine Open champion Robert Pactolerin shot a 68 but stood eight
strokes behind at 142 in a tie with amateur Jobim Carlos, member of the team
that won the Lion City Cup championship in Malaysia last week, who fired the
day’s best score of five-under 67, highlighted by four straight birdies from No.
2.
The tournament, the 11th leg of the 13-stage circuit, is backed by MJ Carr Golf
Management, Jaguar, Land Rover, Studio 23, Balls TV, Srixon/Cleveland Golf,

Top guns fancied as ICTSI-N’woods golf begins

Focus will be on the Asian Tour regulars as the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour
resumes with the ICTSI Royal Northwoods Championship beginning Wednesday,
Oct. 6, at the Royal Northwoods Golf and Country Club in San Rafael, Bulacan.
Order of Merit leader Juvic Pagunsan, Aboitiz leg winner Jay Bayron of Davao and fellow Dabawenyo
defending champion Ferdie Aunzo head the chase for the top P200,000 purse in the
54-hole tournament serving as the 11th leg of the 13-stage circuit organized by
Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.
The troika has kept themselves busy by competing on the regional tour during the
month-long break on the local circuit, giving them the advantage in terms of
form and confidence over those whose last tournament was the Aboitiz
Invitational in Cebu last August.
Aunzo tamed the par-72 Graham Marsh-designed layout last year with a run of
under-par scores although he had to weather a backnine rally by Rey Pagunsan in
the final round to snatch a one-stroke victory in the event sponsored by
International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
But the former national champion has turned in a pair so-so finishes at Del
Monte and Aboitiz after finishing second at Davao last July although he is
expected to toughen up in the next three days in a bid to score back-to-back
victories.
Bayron, on the other hand, tries to become the first player this year to win two
legs in row while Pagunsan guns for his third title after winning the Riviera
and Apo legs in runaway fashions.
Others tipped to contend for the crown are reigning RP Open champion Elmer
Salvador, veteran campaigners Tony Lascuna, Danny Zarate and Robert Pactolerin,
Orchard leg winner Benjie Magada, Richard Sinfuego and Antonio Asistio II and
Rufino Bayron.
An all-weather layout, the Northwoods course has been spruced up in time for the
P1 million tournament, its rolling fairways and unpredictable putting surface
expected to test the field’s talent and skills.
Meanwhile, reigning national champion Clyde Mondilla and Jobim Carlos, fresh
from leading RP to the championship in the Lion City Cup last Friday, head the
roster of amateur seeing action in the event. The others are Dante Becierra,
Peter Villaber, Joey Huerva, Art Arbole, Paul Echavez and Fil-Am Carl
Santos-Ocampo.

Rey Pagunsan, meanwhile, primed up for the main event as he led his team, which
included amateur partners Anton Cabangon, Bert Hidalgo and Hadji Perez, to
victory in yesterday‘s traditional pro-am tournament backed by MJ Carr Golf
Management, Jaguar, Land Rover, Studio 23, Balls TV, Srixon/Cleveland Golf,
Callaway Golf, Odyssey and Golf Punk and media partners Business Mirror,
Inquirer Golf Monthly, A Round of Golf, Pinoygolfer.com and Omnisource.
They shot a 53 to beat Robert Pactolerin and teammates Arnel Arteche, Boy Ungson
and Belem Arancon by one. Jun Bernis and partners Ferdie Caluza, Bons Garcia and
Sim Buyco placed third with 54.

The tournament is backed by MJ Carr Golf Management, Jaguar, Land Rover, Studio
23, Balls TV, Srixon/Cleveland Golf, Callaway Golf, Odyssey and Golf Punk and
media partners Business Mirror, Inquirer Golf Monthly, A Round of

Juvic seeks 3rd title at Northwoods

Juvic Pagunsan goes for his third crown in the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour as he

joins the chase for top honors in the P1 million ICTSI Royal Northwoods

Championship firing off Wednesday (Oct. 6) at the Royal Northwoods Golf and

Country Club in San Rafael, Bulacan.

The 31-year-old Pagunsan has confirmed his participation in the 54-hole

tournament while playing in the Taiwan Masters of the Asian Tour, where he

along

with the local tour’s other top guns have been playing while on a break on the

ICTSI-PGT circuit.

That makes him the prohibitive favorite in the 11th leg of the tour, organized

by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc., with the smooth-swinging Bacolod native

out

to add this week’s title to his runaway victories at Riviera last May and Apo

last July.

But a slew of others, headed by defending champion Ferdie Aunzo, will be out to

foil his bid for a third crown in what is expected to be another closely fought

battle for the top P200,000 purse in the tournament sponsored by International

Container Terminal Services, Inc.

Pagunsan lost by two strokes to Jay Bayron in the last leg at the Aboitiz

Invitational in Cebu last August and had another runner-up finish at Mt.

Malarayat, making him the leading player in the Order of Merit ranking.

He will surely try to firm up his bid for the overall crown with only three

legs

left in the season, including the ICTSI Valley Golf Challenge at Valley Golf

Club in November and the Tour Championship in December in Canlubang, which he

ruled last year.

Although Bayron and Asian Tour campaigner Angelo Que remain undecided whether

or not to join or take a much needed break, the rest of the country’s top

shotmakers are in the fold, including Mars Pucay, winner at Forest Hills, Tony

Lascuna, Orchard leg champion Benjie Magada, Elmer Salvador, who won at

Malarayat, and young turks Rufino Bayron and Antonio Asistio II.

Also on tap is the pro-am tournament on Oct. 5 with the leading pros teaming up

with the invited amateur guests from the event’s chief backers backed by MJ

Carr

Golf Management, Jaguar, Land Rover, Studio 23, Balls TV, Srixon/Cleveland

Golf,

Callaway Golf, Odyssey and Golf Punk and media partners Business

Mirror, Inquirer Golf Monthly, A Round of Golf, Pinoygolfer.com and Omnisource.

Santos-Ocampo.(pr)

RP juniors hangs on to victory; Cuppers, ladies settle for 2nd

The Philippines’ junior team made up for a pair of runner-up finishes of its
fancied senior and ladies squads as it ruled the Lion City Cup crown in
scrambling fashion at the Royal Selangor Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, Friday.
Jobim Carlos fired a 71 to lead RP’s closing 231 for a four-day total of 893,
four ahead of Thailand, which rallied from 19 strokes down but fell short with
an 897 after an even 216.
Reigning national champion Clyde Mondilla, Miggy Yee and Andres Saldana were the
other members of the juniors squad, whose campaign was sponsored by ICTSI and
sanctioned by the National Golf Association of the Phils.
Meanwhile, the Philippines added another year to its Putra Cup drought as it
settled for a runner-up finish behind amazing Thailand and the ladies fell short
of its bid in the Santi Cup and finished second for the second straight year.
Jhonnel Ababa carded a 73, Jessie Balasabas made a 76 and Mhark Fernando turned
in a 77 for a 226 as RP, which took a six-shot lead after first round, wound up
with an 880, 14 strokes behind Thailand.
The Thais also assembled a 216 and ran away with the crown with an 864 while
Singapore took third place with an 884.
Miguel Tabuena, impressive with a 69 in the third round, bombed out with a 78
and failed to count for the first time.

Reigning national ladies champion Irina Gabasa matched par 72 while Dottie
Ardina and Andie Unson made 75 and 76, respectively, as the ICTSI-backed RP
ladies pooled a 223 and barely nipped Malaysia, which had an 894 after a 211,
for runner-up honors.
Chihiro Ikeda, the reigning SEA Games individual champion, was disqualified
after signing a wrong scorecard.
Thailand dominated the Santi Cup with an 882 after a 216, beating the
Philippines by 11 strokes.(pr)
