Manila Standard Today: Torres-Saban paces Davao pro-am

DAVAO CITY (Manila Standard Today, September 2, 2010)—Unfancied Dante Torres and his partner Alejandro Saban assembled the day’s lone sub-par round of one-under 71 yesterday for a one-stroke lead as the tournament big guns struggled in the opening round of the Davao National Pro-Am co-presented by Samsung and Emcor at the Apo Golf and Country Club here.

Torres and Saban complemented each other playing the challenging alternate shots format, carding four birdies against three bogeys for the best score among the 72 teams entered in the P1 million championship.
The duo finished the day one shot ahead of rookie pro Albin Engino and national player Mark Fernando who recovered from a bogey-par-bogey start to match par 72 and assume solo second spot.
Boboy Jaraula and reigning national amateur champion Clyde Mondilla bogeyed the last hole and settled for a 73 that left them in a three-way tie for third with two squads powered by members of the big Ababa golfing clan. Edgar Ababa-Paul Echavez annd Jimmy Bayron-Oscar Ababa also scored 73s.
Dan Cruz, a former Tour hotshot now playing sparingly in competitive events after undergoing a heart bypass several years ago, conspired with another national training pool member Jerson Balasabas for a 74.
Elmer Salvador and Jovi Neri had the best score of 76 among the seeded squads.
Pagunsan and weekend player Jaime Tan was at 77 while Cassius Casas and Benjie Senining was another two strokes further back at 79.
Only the top 30 teams after today’s round will advance to the final round tomorrow.
Emcor president and COO Celso Villegas and Emcor golfing chairman Jimmy del Rosario are the men behind the staging of this tourney also supported by Kawasaki, Tri-com, BCLN Golf, LVL Construction, Malayan Insurance, Allegoiance Cargo, Edcon, Mega Joy Trading, Aldwin Oriental Graphics, Canon, Tran World Brokerage Corp., Cargo Serve, MDR, Banbros, Goetz and MSI-ECS.
The notable teams with their respective scores: Tonyt Fernando-Larry Pasqual 75, Boyet Zaragosa-Jhonel Ababa 75, Jay Bayron-Etrone Alimar 77, Tony Lascuna-Martin Castillo 76, Marvin Dumandan-Anthony Sasin 76, Ferdie Aunzo-Monchit Mackay 78 and Mike Bibat-Chad Borja 78.
