Del Monte grabs lead

BANNY ABANO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY --- Del Monte Golf Club grabbed a one-point lead
over defending champion Canlubang halfway through the 64th Philippine
Airlines Interclub golf championships Thursday.
Banny AbaƱo, a 22-year-old son of a former caddie, broke par for the
second straight day to lead Del Monte with 37 points on the strength
of four birdies against three bogeys.
Leonard Lofranco matched par for 36 points, Vince Lusterio contributed
35 while Noel Langamin added 33 as Del Monte matched Canlubang’s 141
points at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club.
Del Monte could have returned with a three-point lead if not for the
two-stroke penalty slapped against Langamin for fixing a ball mark
outside the green on the 11th hole.
“We showed today that we can play well at Pueblo,” said Del Monte
captain Yoyong Velez who did not count with 27 points. “We have a very
good chance of winning this tournament.”
The Sugar Barons drew a pair of 37 points from Jobim Carlos and Joey
Huerva, 35 from Paul Echavez and 32 from Migo Ochoa to keep their
hopes alive for a sixth straight championship.
Carlos had an eagle, three birdies against four bogeys while Huerva
also had an eagle, four birdies against five bogeys.
Cebu Country Club, the surprise first day leader, struggled with 133
points with burly Bayani Garcia the only player to match par for 36
points.
Jovi Neri shot 33 points while Marko Sarmiento and Eric Deen each had
32 points for CCC which now trails Del Monte by five points.
Del Monte has yet to field national champion Clyde Mondilla who is
enjoying good form following his runner-up finish in the
WWWExpress-DHL Amateurs championship.
“We have players who can match Clyde,” said Canlubang non-playing
skipper Luigi Tabuena. “it’s just a matter of who gets hot. I think it
will go down to the final day.”
The third round will be played at Del Monte Friday with the last 18
holes set at Pueblo Saturday.
Camp Evangelista kept the lead in the Sportswriters division after
scoring 101 points at Pueblo de Oro for a two-day total of 213.
Jun Maghamil led Evangelista with 29 points and was supported by Edgar
Gulle (26), Luis Jainga (25) and Danny Jamin (21).
Red Hawk, a team based in Southern California, leaned on Benjie
Sumulong’s 32 points to take second spot at 202. Other scorers were
Pom Cornello (28), Don Breganza (26) and Louie Jesena (24).
Tied for third place were Sherwood Hills and Zamboanga with 200 points apiece.

Three teams are separated by a single point in the Friendship division.
