Del Monte opens up 12-point margin

CLYDE MONDILLA

Clyde Mondilla scored 37 points – one-under-par 71 in medal play – and led Del Monte to a third round 138 points and a 12-point lead over defending champion Canlubang in the penultimate round of the 64th Philippine Airlines Interclub’s Men’s Championship event.
The 17-year-old Mondilla, the reigning Philippine Amateur champion, gunned down four birdies against three bogeys and Julius Bautista, another caddy’s son, backed him up with 36 solid markers at muddy Del Monte Golf Club in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon to put the hosts in position towards making this event a rout.
Del Monte now has 412 total points after the squad counted the 33 of Mark Mondilla and the 32 of Magno Arancon Jr. which was actually just a point lower than the top-scoring 33 of Joey Huerva for the Sugar Barons.
Thirteen-year-old rookie Gabriel Manotoc atoned for a lackluster debut on Wednesday by contributing 32 points like Art Arbole for the Barons, whose fourth score was the 30 of the veteran Abe Rosal.
Senior standout Dave Hernandez, after finishing second overall in the individual race to Tommy Manotoc in their division, struggled to post just 29 and not be counted.
Cebu Country Club, the first round leader and darkhorse in the division, pooled 131 points on the strength of Gio Gandiongo’s 36 to tie Canlubang in second spot as the final round goes back to bumpy Pueblo de Oro in Cagayan de Oro.
Lloyd Go fired 35 points, Mark Dy had 33 and Chuckie Hong shot 27 to complete scoring for Cebu Country Club, which closes out with Carl Almario and burly Bayani Garcia, who have combined to shoot 74 points in the first two days.
“Anything can still happen in golf,” Canlubang non-playing skipper Luigi Yulo said. “We will still come out fighting despite the huge deficit.”
Manila Southwoods, a traditional power in the division, drew 37 points from former junior standout AR Ramos but amassed just 126 for the day to drop 47 points out of the pace with a 365 total.
It’s still a wide-open race in the Sportswriters Division where Camp Evangelista clung to a one-point lead over two squads and was ahead by just two over Eagle Ridge.
Camp Evangelista actually allowed those three teams back into the fight after shooting just 87 points in Del Monte as Rudy Litang’s paltry 25 proved enough to lead the team, which now has a 300-point total.
Red Hawk shot 97 points built around Bejie Sumulong’s 28 and the 27 of Ferdie Borbosa for 299, the same total carried by Zamboanga, which returned 99 points on the strength of Isaac Elumba’s 32 points.
Eagle Ridge shot 110 with Lawrence Celestino shooting 37 points and Carlos Tinio adding 31. Jose Nepomuceno and Moon Ho-lee counted with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
In Friendship play, Jessie Castillo fired 25 points to lead PGA BC to a third round 93 for 269 overall and a 19-point lead over first round leader UP Tee Jots, who managed just 75 points for the second straight day, and South Cotabato.
South Cotabato also pooled 75 with the 22 of Butch Cordura standing out as the best score.
